Understanding blood in urine
Blood in the urine, haematuria, can be benign or it can be the first sign of something serious. The job of a specialist consultation is to tell you which.
What is haematuria?
Haematuria means red blood cells in the urine. Two patterns matter clinically:
- Visible (gross) haematuria. The urine looks pink, red, or tea-coloured.
- Microscopic haematuria. The urine looks normal, but red cells show up on a dipstick or urine analysis.
Both need a proper workup. Visible haematuria carries a higher risk of underlying disease and is investigated faster.
Common causes by age group
In adults under 40, the usual causes are urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and benign things like recent strenuous exercise. From 40 onward the list grows: benign prostatic enlargement, bladder polyps, and (in roughly one in five cases of visible haematuria) urological cancers of the bladder, kidney, or upper urinary tract.
Most cases turn out to be benign. The reason to see a specialist is so that the rare serious case is not missed, and so the workup happens in one visit rather than dragging out across months.
